Applying Differently
I made a list of the different types of college bound students I have been working with and thought a lot about what they might be thinking right now: Students bound for HBCUs, who are happily going off to an institution of higher learning so very different than anything they have experienced in Los Angeles. Learning-differently kids who I hope know how much they have to offer all of us and First Generation kids who are beyond excited to forge a path for their sometimes wary and sometimes unsupportive family. Twins valiantly struggling with the possibility of a first-time and potentially permanent separation; one more excited than the other and wondering how much to hide that. The kids who are recruited athletes, the kids who attended multiple high schools, the home-schooled, the test optional. The kids who are going to community college. They are all going somewhere and I am betting they are all a little bit nervous as well as excited. Which of us going off to college was not?
